What is automotive IoT?

Automotive IoT is a term used when embedded IoT solutions are used in vehicles with the goal to make them more efficient, smarter, safer and overall more intelligent.

It is expected that more than 250 million cars will be connected by the year 2020 which will have a huge impact on IoT industry. Consumer-level tracking solutions is the area where we see the most activity in automotive IoT solutions.

There are a couple of key areas in automotive industry where the use of IoT can improve them.

  • Advanced Driver-Assitance systems (ADAS)

These can be either vision or radar/lidar based ADAS. They scan the surroundings of the vehicle with the sensors and collect data. This data is then used by ADAS to assist the driver. Some of these ADAS are used in the form of Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind spot monitoring, Parking Assistance, Lane tracking and Collision warning to name a few.

  • Predictive maintenance systems

Connection in-vehicle sensors to IoT opens new business opportunities. Car manufacturers/sellers could monitor vehicle state automatically and inform customers before a vehicle lets them stranded on the road. Insurance companies use `black-boxes` that monitor how the vehicle is driven, helping them asses driver risk level.

  • Telematics systems

The goal of telematic systems is to monitor and track vehicles location, movement, and other parameters. The system can track vehicles and their parameters in real-time if needed. Common parameters to monitor are vehicle speed, tire pressure, fuel consumption and driving times. This information can be used for effective fleet management like route optimization, re-routing vehicles around traffic jams for example.

Displaying IoT devices and GIS

With the right mapping system, it can be very easy to take your IoT data to the next level and display it on a map in real-time. By some estimations, there will be 30 Billion IoT endpoints by 2020. We utilize mapping software from ESRI as it offers a lot of options when it comes to visualization and analysis of GIS data.

GIS data can be stored in ArcGIS online, on-premise or a combination of both. ESRI also offers different platforms when it comes to software developments. These can be traditional desktop applications, native applications for mobile devices or web-based solutions.
